Chronic joint pains is another disabling condition affecting a large majority of elderly patients. In elderly patients, wear and tear of the weight-bearing joints particularly the knee and the hip joints constitute a major cause. In middle-aged younger aged patients, Fibromyalgia, Rheumatoid arthritis, Spondyloarthropathies are the major culprits.
Treatment involves the use of Disease-modifying agents (DMARDs) and targeted joint injections to alleviate the symptoms of pain and inflammation. The goal of treatment is to minimize the use of over-the-counter pain killers and maximize the social as well as psychological uplift of the patient in their routine day-to-day activities.
