Fibromyalgia is a major cause of widespread body pains associated with sleep disturbances in middle-aged groups of patients. In essence, it involves sensitization of a patient’s nervous system which tends to transmit signals of pain to the patient’s brain in spite of no stimulation or activity.

Symptoms include chronic musculoskeletal pains, stiffness, sleep impairment, memory problems, acid peptic disorders, headache, constipation or diarrhea, urinary problems, loss of appetite, etc.

Treatment involves the use of medications that help in desensitization of the hyperactive nerves as well as interventions like trigger point injections, systemic desensitization therapy.
